The ramblings of a bipolar

About Me

South African Infantry
South African Infantry

I consider myself an ordinary person who has an exaggerated sense of right and wrong as well as extreme curiosity, it often causes problems as I am too outspoken

I like to believe I have good values, I attempt to be non judgemental, do not judge others by their race, creed or colour but rather whether they are kind, understanding and of gentle soul

The product of a middle class family, I studied and worked hard for most of my life

I have two terrific children, a son and daughter and of course a beautiful granddaughter

I  am good friends with my ex-wife

I have Bipolar Disorder but always say it could have been far worse and I am more fortunate than most

I am sure you must be curious as to the reason for the picture of my military insignia. I was conscripted at the age of seventeen and a half, an impressionable age; these experiences had a positive influence on my character inculcating strong and good values:

I believe in courage, honesty, dignity, humour, bearing the consequences of my actions, being reliable, displaying kindness and understanding and helpfulness to those weaker than myself, supportiveness and understanding to family and friends and those in need and many other attributes vaunted by society

Most of all I learned the importance of enduring harsh and unfair treatment with dignity, to stand up and be counted, to face the day, to be on parade every day and be present with my comrades

Due to my illness, I am no longer able to be on parade every day, often for numerous consecutive days or months which causes me to feel ashamed. At times like this I cast my mind to the military service when I was not absent for a day, it is some consolation for I know I had the strength to endure and that assists

I like to think I bear my illness with courage and dignity and maybe even humour; all this I gained from my experience in the military

I hope this explains the significance of the picture of the military insignia

I have experienced a great deal in my life and have many terrific memories of the past
